The Institutes SMT and SMA designation programs can help you increase the operating effectiveness of your building and make you more valuable to your organization. Designed to meet the needs of hands-on technicians and building engineers, the SMT and SMA programs offer instruction in technologies and trends in the maintenance field that show you how to manage energy-efficient, environmentally sound, and cost-effective building systems. Both SMT and SMA courses detail specific operating systems, while the SMA program includes additional courses covering environmental issues, administration, and building design and maintenance. Through these programs youll gain career-building skills and knowledge, as well as recognition as an integral part of your facilities team.
The SMT and SMA programs offer two levels of proficiency for career development. The first five courses detail specific operating systems and make up the SMT program (As of July 1, 1999):
- Boilers, Heating Systems, and Applied Mathematics
- Refrigeration Systems and Accessories
- Air Handling, Water Treatment, and Plumbing Systems
- Electrical Systems and Illumination
- Energy Management and Controls
Three additional courses round out the program by addressing the broad issues of concern to systems administrators. Added to the five above, these three courses will earn you the SMA designation:
- Building Design and Maintenance
- Administration
- Environmental Health and Safety Issues
Code of Ethics
Honesty and integrity are important elements of an SMTs or SMAs reputation. The Institute promotes this goal by requiring that all designees abide by a strict Code of Professional Ethics and Conduct.
Continuing Professional Development
To maintain active status of the SMA designation, 18 points of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) credit must be earned every three years. For a free brochure detailing the CPD requirements, email BOMA - Long Island at info@bomali.org.
College Credit Recommendation
Courses in the SMT and SMA curriculums are designed to cover the equivalent of 24 classroom hours.
